On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, Swain County High School proudly hosted its first annual Career Conference, made possible through the incredible support of our business and school communities.
Over 60 professionals representing more than 30 employers from a wide variety of career fields donated their time to speak with students and share their experiences. Even more special, 26 of the presenters were graduates of Swain High School, returning to invest in the next generation of students.
This event was designed to challenge common misconceptions that students must leave home to find a “good-paying job” or that graduating from a small public high school somehow limits future opportunities. Our presenters strongly disproved those myths by sharing real examples of successful careers built both locally and beyond.
Students explored careers across a broad spectrum of industries and educational pathways. Presenters represented opportunities ranging from skilled trades and careers requiring only high school diplomas or on-the-job training to careers involving community college credentials, bachelor’s degrees, and professional degrees.
Business partners included local, regional, national, and even international employers. Students experienced hands-on learning opportunities, explored millions of dollars’ worth of equipment, and even met Moose the dog, who helped teach students about careers in veterinary medicine.
Unlike a traditional gym-style career fair, the Career Conference was intentionally personalized. Students registered their career interests ahead of time, and organizers created individualized schedules for each student. Throughout the day, students rotated through three 25-minute sessions based on their selected interests.
In addition to learning about careers, students practiced valuable professional skills such as following a conference schedule, communicating professionally, adapting to unexpected changes, and understanding the importance of resilience in the workplace and in life.
As with any first-year event, there is always room for growth, but the inaugural Career Conference was an outstanding success and a strong foundation for future opportunities for Swain County students.
This event would not have been possible without the many individuals and organizations who said “yes” and chose to invest in our students. Special thanks go to:
The businesses and professionals who volunteered their time to speak with students
The Gear Up staff who helped coordinate and run the event
Swain High faculty members who welcomed presenters into their classrooms
High school staff and administrators who helped supervise and support the conference
Most importantly, the students who engaged professionally and enthusiastically throughout the day
Together, our community demonstrated the power of partnership, mentorship, and belief in the bright futures of Swain County students.
