When to Keep Home from School

Deciding when a child is too sick to go to school can be a difficult decision to make.   The guidelines below can help when trying to decide.   Please feel free to call your school nurse if further information is needed.

Stay at Home…Please consider keeping your child at home (and possibly contacting their health care provider) if they have any of the following symptoms…

Appearance, Behavior – unusually tired, pale, lack of appetite, difficult to wake, confused or irritable

Eyes – thick mucus or pus draining from the eye, eye pain and/or redness, matted eyelids after sleep

Fever – temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.  Your child must be fever free and off all fever reducing medications for 24 hours before they return to school.

Sore Throat – especially with fever or swollen glands in the neck.   If your child is diagnosed with Strep Throat, they may return to school 24 hours after antibiotic treatment begins.

Vomiting/Diarrhea –  please keep home until illness is over

Ear pain –  untreated ear infections can cause problems with hearing loss

Rash – especially with fever

Acute Pain –  Students that have pain that requires narcotics should not attend school until their pain is managed with over-the-counter medications (Tylenol, Advil..)

Please keep sick children away from school and school sponsored events.  This will help to make a  stronger, healthier community!
